Description

Rotala Blood red is a popular stem plant that's easily recognised due to its brilliant red. Most red aquarium plants require incredibly high lighting, Co2 injection and iron addition. Rotala Blood Red, however, only requires medium lighting. Without Co2 its colour will still be red but not as vibrant. It is new to Australia and fast growing making it a great attraction for the background of aquascapes.

Rotala Blood Red is a striking stem plant that originates from Southeast Asia. It features delicate, finely textured leaves that grow in pairs along the stem, creating an exquisite layered effect. What sets this plant apart is its intense red coloration, which ranges from deep burgundy to bright crimson, depending on various factors such as light intensity and nutrient availability. When fully grown, Rotala Blood Red forms dense clusters of lush foliage, making it a focal point in any aquascape.

Cultivation and Care

While Rotala Blood Red is a visually captivating plant, it does require specific care to thrive. It flourishes in aquariums with high light intensity, typically achieved using LED lights. Providing a nutrient-rich substrate and regular fertilization is essential to support its growth and vibrant coloration. CO2 supplementation is recommended to ensure robust growth and prevent nutrient deficiencies. Maintaining stable water parameters, including temperature (around 75-82°F or 24-28°C) and pH (slightly acidic to neutral), promotes optimal growth and color development. Regular pruning is necessary to control its height and maintain a compact form.

Aquascape Design and Versatility

Rotala Blood Red offers aquascapers a wealth of design possibilities. Its vibrant red color serves as a striking contrast against other aquatic plants, rocks, or driftwood. This plant is often used as a midground or background plant in aquascapes, where its upright growth and intense hues create a focal point. It can be paired with contrasting green plants or used alongside other red-hued flora to create stunning color gradients. Rotala Blood Red is also suitable for Dutch-style aquascapes, where it can be meticulously trimmed and shaped to achieve a neat, manicured appearance.

Health Benefits and Oxygenation

Apart from its aesthetic appeal, Rotala Blood Red provides essential benefits to the aquarium ecosystem. Like other aquatic plants, it absorbs excess nutrients, helping prevent algae blooms and maintaining water quality. Additionally, through the process of photosynthesis, it releases oxygen into the water, improving the overall oxygenation and well-being of fish and other inhabitants. The dense foliage of Rotala Blood Red also serves as a refuge for small aquatic organisms, offering shelter and breeding grounds.

Rotala Blood Red stands out as a captivating aquatic plant that brings vibrant color and life to aquariums. Its delicate foliage and intense red hues make it a sought-after addition to aquascapes, adding a touch of elegance and beauty. Embracing the enchanting qualities of Rotala Blood Red allows aquarists to create visually stunning underwater landscapes that captivate the eye and nourish the aquatic ecosystem.
