What are Super Red Bristlenose?
The Super Red Bristlenose are freshwater fish native to lakes, ponds and marshes in South America. They are great tank cleaners and algae eaters, which is one of the main reasons this fish is so common in home aquariums. They are very peaceful and generally mind their own business and are therefore suitable to live with most kinds of fish but consideration should be taken into suitable water parameters of tank mates. The Super Reds enjoy vegetable bases food like algae and it is recommended that their diet is supplemented with Algae wafers.
How to Set Up an Aquarium for Super Red Bristlenose?
Setting up an aquarium for Super Red Bristlenose Plecos requires the right tank conditions to keep them happy and active. The water temperature should be between 22-28°C with a pH level of 6.5-7.5 in a minimum tank size of 60 litres. Make sure to provide driftwood, caves, and hiding spots for security and natural behavior and reduce stress. Hardy plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and Amazon Sword make great additions to the tank because they provide large surfaces for beneficial microorganisms and algae to help these catfish graze.

Super Red Bristlenose Plecos are omnivorous fish that do not require but appreciate and thrive on a varied diet rich in plant matter, algae, and protein. They love algae-based foods like algae wafers, and vegetables such as sliced cucumer and zucchinis. Occasional protein-rich foods such as bottom feeder tablets and catfish pellets also help to create a balanced, enriched diet.
Super Red Bristlenose Breeding Tips for Beginners
Breeding Super Red Bristlenose Plecos is super easy and beginner-friendly. Typically, a tank at least 60-80 litres is required, and keep the ratio at 1 male to 2-3 females. It is essential to place several pleco caves for males to protect and shelter the eggs laid by the female. Aquarium plants and driftwood also help to create a secure environment. To encourage spawning, do larger 50% water changes and raise oxygenation to stimulate raining. Once fries spawn, feed crushed or powered foods, and blanched vegetables.
Which plants and decorations work best for Super Red Bristlenose?
For Super Red Bristlenose Plecos, Anubias, Java Fern, and Amazon Sword are excellent plants, as they easy to keep, grow slow and provide hiding spots. Java Moss is also a good choice for grazing and for fry to hide in. Driftwood is essential, offering both food source (algae) and hiding places. Caves made from ceramic, PVC pipes, or coconut shells provide secure spaces for plecos to rest or breed or sleep. These plants and decorations help create a comfortable place which allow plecos to feel like they are in their natural habitat.
Which fish are compatible with Super Red Bristlenoses?
These Bristlenose catfish can be kept solo on in packs. They are extremely friendly and can even be kept with shrimp frie and snails. They do well with small, peaceful fish like Tetras (Neon, Cardinal), Rasboras (Harlequin, Chili), and Livebearers (Guppies, Platies, Mollies). Corydoras Catfish, Otocinclus and even Dwarf Cichlids like German Blue Rams or Gouramis can share the tank space peacefully with the bristlenose. However avoid aggressive fish like Oscars, Jack Dempseys, and Tiger Barbs, as they may be curious and annoy your plecos.
