Product Information

Ambulia, or Limnophila sessiliflora, is one of the popular ones in the aquarium hobby due to its feathery green leaves, fast growth, and ease of care. Sometimes this plant is called Ambulia limnophila or Giant Ambulia when referring to larger varieties. It is a versatile plant that adds a lush and vibrant touch to any aquascape. Because this is a rapidly growing plant that can be very easy to care for, it is appealing to both beginning and experienced aquarists.

Why Choose Ambulia for Your Aquarium?

  1. Beautiful, Feather-Like Foliage: Ambulia is known for its delicate, soft leaves that create a lush, bushy effect in aquariums, providing a natural, forest-like ambiance.
  2. Great Background Plant: Growing tall and thick, Ambulia is ideal for filling in background spaces, giving aquascapes a full, layered look that complements other aquarium plants.
  3. Oxygenating Powerhouse: Like many fast-growing plants, Ambulia helps oxygenate the water, creating a healthier environment for fish and shrimp.
  4. Easy to Grow: With minimal requirements for light and nutrients, Ambulia adapts to a range of aquarium setups, making it a reliable choice for low- or high-tech tanks.

Ambulia Aquarium Care: Light, CO2, and Nutrients

Ambulia is a pretty undemanding plant. It grows well in medium lighting and can do well without the injection of CO2, though of course it will grow faster and show more vibrant colors with CO2. For good growth:

Lighting: Ambulia requires medium to high lighting. With strong light, its leaves are denser and show their best colors. Low lights do not kill the plant but just make it grow at a slower pace.
CO2 and Fertilizers: Not necessary, but this plant does benefit from having some extra CO2 pumped into its environment. Standard liquid fertilizers are great, especially those with iron, for healthy leaf coloration.
Water Conditions: Ambulia can tolerate a wide range for pH - typically between 6.0-7.5 - with soft to moderately hard water conditions.

How to Plant and Propagate Ambulia

Planting Ambulia aquarium plants is pretty easy; just push the stems into the substrate, spaced a little apart from each other, to allow for spreading. The plant will soon anchor itself with roots and start growing upwards towards the surface within 1-2 weeks.

Propagation is also easy: just cut a healthy stem and replant. It makes Ambulia a great candidate for all kinds of aquarists who would wish to have a plant that grows fast and which they can share in their tank to achieve continuity in the outlook of their aquarium.

Giant Ambulia: The Bold Choice for Larger Tanks

Giant Ambulia will work with larger tanks. It generally has the same growing characteristics of normal Ambulia but bears larger leaves and grows higher, thus making a hearty background plant. Limnophila sessiliflora in its giant form adds depth to aquascapes, combining with smaller plants up front.

Benefits of Adding Ambulia to Your Tank

  • Natural Shade for Fish: As Ambulia grows tall, it provides shaded areas, which can be helpful for fish that prefer low light or need hiding spots.
  • Excellent for Shrimp Tanks: Ambulia’s feathery leaves offer hiding places for shrimp, while its dense growth traps small particles, creating an excellent feeding area for shrimp and fry.
  • Reduces Algae: Ambulia’s fast growth rate helps it absorb excess nutrients from the water, limiting algae growth and improving water quality.

Where to Buy Ambulia Aquarium Plants

In most aquarium stores and through online sources, both Ambulia and Giant Ambulia are widely available. Searching, they may be listed as Ambulia Limnophila sessiliflora or simply "Ambulia aquarium plant," referring to this popular species. When buying Ambulia, it is essential to find plants with healthy green leaves and avoid those that show some browning or decaying.

Tips for Long-Term Ambulia Care

Once established, Ambulia will grow fast and will indeed appreciate regular pruning to keep it under control. It also allows you to prevent it from shading out other plants in the tank. With regard to dead leaves, remove them so as to keep the water quality high.
