Red Cherry Shrimp

The Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda), also known as Red Cherry Shrimp or RCS, is a dwarf freshwater shrimp native to Taiwan. Red cherry shrimp is a freshwater shrimp that is peaceful and famous for its algae eating abilities. Suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists, it is one of the hardiest and tolerant shrimp available.

They will add colour into any tank they are in and require little maintenance. Their beautiful red color comes from years of selective breeding, and there are now different grades and types of red cherry shrimp. This invertebrate produces little waste and survive in nearly all freshwater aquarium setups, even ones without a filter. If it is in a planted setup with lots of shelter and hiding spots, this cherry shrimp will start producing baby shrimps very soon!

Key Features of Red Cherry Shrimp:

  • Size: 0.6 mm - 1 cm (usually up to 1.5 inches or 3.8 cm)
  • Genus: Neocaridina
  • Color: Red (the most commonly sold morph)
  • Breeding: Breeds in freshwater environments
  • Diet: Eats fish flakes, shrimp pellets, fish pellets, and algae wafers
  • Water Temperature: 20-24°C, with flexibility for a wider range
  • Aquarium pH: Ideal between 7.0 and 7.8, though slightly wider ranges are acceptable
  • Aquarium Lighting: Standard community tank lighting is sufficient
  • Lifespan: Typically around 1 year, or a bit longer in ideal conditions

Over-run with shrimp

Purchased 7 shrimp for the kids fish tank, I initially thought they all died as I didn’t see them at first, but they soon started popping up.
The kids lost interest, as they do, but I was hooked and upgraded to a larger tank. Their population had grown and we transferred 48 shrimp to the new tank. Now they are absolutely thriving, easily 150+
