What are Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppies?

Our Dumbo Mosaic Guppies are Locally bred, The males have red with black spots in the tail while the females tend to have blue. When buying Guppies we recommend either going all males or a ratio of 1 male to 2 females or more. This is because males tend to chase females often relentlessly which stressed her out. Adding a couple more females diverts the males attention and reduces stress during mating.

A great tropical fish for freshwater aquarium fish beginners, the Guppy is a very hardy tropical fish that is also a very prolific breeder. The male Dumbo Ear Mosaic guppy is easy to distinguish from the female because the male is usually more colorful with extremely colorful and large caudal fins (tails). The female is usually larger, thicker bodied, with less color and a smaller cuadal fin (tail).

How to Set Up an Aquarium for Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppies?

Setting up an aquarium for Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppies is quite simply. They will require a minimum tank size of 20 litres (to house a trio), a filter and heater because they are tropical fish. However they are quite social, active fish and would love a larger tank of 40-60 litres with more swimming space and larger groups. Add a lid to prevent them jumping. The ideal water temperature ranges between 22-28°C, with a pH level of 6.8-7.8 and soft to moderately hard water. A gentle filter, such as a sponge or internal filter, is best to prevent strong currents that could stress these little fish. Adding fast growing plants such as PearlweedRed Root Floaters and Giant Duckweed helps to absorb  excess nutrients and nitrates from the fish.

Best Foods for Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppies

Although they will do fine with just flake food and floating pellets that can be eaten in one bite, guppies do prefer a varied diet just like you and I. A rotation of flake foods, dry foods, live foods, vegetables like zucchini, and floating pellets help with a balanced, healthy diet which also enhances breeding. Feeding once or twice a day is sufficient, and only what they can eat in 1 minute to prevent fouling water quality.

Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppy Breeding Tips for Beginners

Breeding Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppies is relatively easy and beginner-friendly, as these livebearers reproduce often and without the need for special conditions. To increase breeding success, start with a ratio of one male to two or three females to prevent too much stress for the females. A minimum tank size of 40 liters is recommended, with plenty of live plants like Java Moss or floating plants such as Guppy Grass to provide hiding spots for fry and parents. Keep the water temperature higher at 26°C  will encourage frequent breeding by raising their activity and metabolism.

To help with spawning, ensure the guppies have a nutritious diet with high-protein foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and quality guppy flakes. Live food like brine shrimp specifically entices mating behaviour due to its high protein source. Once the fry are born, it’s best to separate them into a breeding box or a fry tank to prevent adult fish from eating them which may be surprising but often happens. Feeding the fry powdered fish food, crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, or raw egg yolk will increase survival rates and fast growth.

Which fish are compatible with Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppy?

One of the reasons Dumbo Ear Mosaic Guppies are so popular becuase they are peaceful and social fish, making them ideal for community aquariums with other inhabitants like fish and shrimp. They do great with peaceful companions like similar sized tetras, other livebearerers, minnows, danios, and catfish and plecos. However, fin nippers should be avoided because they might take an unwanted interest in the long flowing fins often found in male guppies. Furthermore, avoid significantly larger fish which may hunt and associate guppies with food.

Dumbo ear mosaic guppies

Was very happy with the fish I received, one female had a huge load of babies a week after arriving. I was however disappointed with the delivery. Fish were left on top on my letterbox in the full sun for hours before I received notification that they had been delivered. With most Australia post parcels I receive, I am notified right up to when my parcel arrives. Something to do with postage method I believe. Although the fish were in a polystyrene box I was surprised they were alive as I estimated they were in transit for 5 days.

Cute little fish

I purchased 3 female and 1 male dumbo ear mosaic and they all arrived healthy. I'm in Melbourne and placed the order Sunday. They were shipped Express Post on Tuesday morning and I received them Wednesday afternoon. I wasn't sure the best way to acclimatise after being shipped, so after some googling I decided on floating the bag for 10 min, then adding some of my aquarium. water to the bag and floating another 10 min. Then strained all water out and dropped the fish into their new home. They are so happy alert and active.

Arrived 5 days after order and fish died not long after sadly I think it’s too far a distance for the poor fish to travel as this is the second time I ordered fish and they died but plants were fine and doing well
