What is the pH scale?
pH stands for "potential of Hydrogen." So, pH is the measure of hydrogen ions in a solution.
Suppose there is a high hydrogen ions concentration; the pH will be lower (Acidic). In contrast, if the hydrogen ions are less concentrated, the pH will be higher (Base). The pH scale ranges between 0 and 14. From 0 to 6.9, pH is acidic, and as the numbers increase, the acids are ranked from most powerful to least.
The number 7 on the scale represents neutral, and from 7.1 to 14 represents base. Beginning at number 14, you will have the strongest bases; those above number 7 are feeble.
Therefore, what does an elevated pH in a fish habitat indicate? It indicates the water is extremely alkaline. Simply, the scale will register above seven.
Why is pH important in aquariums?
Hydrogen ions facilitate the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules through the membranes of fish. Hydrogen is an ion with a positive charge that plays a crucial function in transportation. As a result, alterations in the ions concentration can result in complications.
Note that the fish may have a high or low tolerance to pH depending on their type and breed. For instance, several freshwater fish tolerates low pH, whereas some varieties, like goldfish, tolerate high pH.
Symptoms Of Fish Tanks With A High pH
Although it is difficult to observe the tank environment and determine that the pH is high, there are signs that can be observed. They are listed below:
High pH levels are harmful to fish gills.
Fish gills serve the same function as lungs in other animals. Therefore, a high pH level in a fish tank converts non-toxic ammonia into toxic ammonia that damages fish gills. The condition of a fish's gills can influence its overall health.
The fish's skin will become damaged.
To prevent parasites from assaulting their epidermis, fish secrete glycoprotein mucus from body cells. The glycoprotein is what makes the skin slimy to the touch. If the water pH is high, the slime will be damaged, and the fish will be prone to parasites. You will usually notice white spots as a result of infection
The fish's fins will deteriorate.
Changes in mucus secretion expose the fish's body to high levels of moisture. The moisture causes the fins to decay, which, over time, makes it difficult for the fish to swim.
High pH Can Cause Toxic Ammonia
With increased alkalinity, the ammonia becomes toxic. Ammonia is toxic to fish, so you will detect a high concentration in the tank if you test for it. pH can be determined using test strips.
The growth of algae will dramatically increase.
Typically, cyanobacteria proliferate swiftly in alkaline water. Therefore, if the pH of the water is high, conditions will be optimal for algae growth.
High pH Causes Mild Alterations In Fish Behavior.
The fish becomes uneasy and acts erratically as a result. They will dart around the aquarium and scrape against objects.
