What is Duckweed?
Duckweed is a hardy aquarium plant with 30 distinct species.
Duckweeds, water lentils, or water lenses (Lemnoideae) are aquatic flowering plants that float on the water surface of still or slow-moving bodies of freshwater and wetlands.
This plant has a basic structure with no central stem or leaves. The majority of each plant comprises a small organized "thallus" or "frond" structure only a few cells thick, frequently with air pockets.
Vegetative reproduction is prevalent, with asexual budding (vegetative reproduction) originating from a meristem positioned at the base of the front.
The flower of the duckweed genus Wolffia is barely 0.3 millimetres long, making it the tiniest known.
How To Grow Duckweed in an Aquarium Rapidly
Duckweed is a water plant that grows in lakes and appears to be a green blanket over the surface. It's simple to cultivate, and it serves as natural food for many animals and prevents mosquitoes from breeding. You may grow it indoors in an aquarium or outdoors in a pond.
- It is best to purchase duckweed from a pet store, and not harvested from nature because it will likely be parasite free and sterile.
- Duckweed can spread from one plantlet, and it propagates by growing and splitting into two smaller pieces.
- Place the duckweed in the aquarium or pond.
- Place the tray in an area that receives indirect sunlight or aquarium lights for at least 6 hours a day.
- Change the water weekly.
- Transplant the multiplied duckweed to your intended spot using a net.
Duckweed Plant Light Requirements
Duckweed thrives in a wide range of pHs, from 4.5 to 7.5, and can endure a wide range of temperatures by surviving at levels between 4.5 and 7.5. It is more cold tolerant than other aquatic plants and can withstand temperatures as low as 7°C for normal development.
Duckweed will go dormant on the pond bottom during Winter when temperatures drop below freezing. Due to radiation, a full, thick mat of duckweed may have a temperature of approximately 10° above ambient air conditions.
