Giant Duckweed
Giant Duckweed
Portion Size
You will receive 15-20 plantlets.
Description
Giant Duckweed is an awesome floating plant. It propagates rapidly and is extremely easy, with nearly identical requirements to normal duckweed, and about 5-6 times its size. Giant Duckweed prefers a still surface to grow on. It acts as a great source of food for goldfish.
I would highly recommend this if you have algae problems or high nitrates. Giant Duckweed floats at the surface, blocking out light, and will consume excess nutrients in the water. A shrimp favourite to graze on!

Benefits of Giant Duckweed in Aquariums:
Duckweed offers several advantages when introduced to aquariums:
Water Filtration: Giant Duckweed acts as a natural filter, absorbing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, thereby helping maintain water quality.
Oxygenation: Through photosynthesis, Giant Duckweed releases oxygen into the water, ensuring a well-oxygenated environment for fish and other aquatic organisms.
Shade and Cover: The floating mats of Duckweed provide shade for fish, helping reduce stress, and also serve as hiding places for fry and other small aquatic creatures.
Duckweed Control Methods:
While Duckweed can be beneficial, it may also become invasive if left uncontrolled. Here are some methods for managing its growth:
Manual Removal: Regularly skim the surface of the water to remove excess Duckweed. This can help control its spread and maintain a balanced ecosystem.
Reducing Nutrient Levels: Since Giant Duckweed thrives on nutrients, minimizing excessive feeding and controlling waste build-up in the aquarium can help prevent excessive growth.
Conclusion:
Duckweed is a fascinating plant that offers numerous benefits in aquariums. With proper care and attention, you can enjoy its growth and the advantages it brings to your aquatic ecosystem. Understand the differences between Azolla and Duckweed, appreciate the benefits it offers, and implement effective control methods to maintain a healthy balance. Embrace the wonder of Duckweed and create a thriving aquatic environment that both you and your aquatic inhabitants will enjoy.
