Description

Dwarf Hairgrass (or Mini Hair Grass) is a very popular and versatile mini aquarium plant that can be used to create a lush, bright green carpet of a freshwater tank. Its max height is around 5-10cm when fully grown. Fish love to forage among the thin blades of grass, and baby fry can seek shelter there. Additionally, dwarf hairgrass is relatively easy to grow, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced hobbyists. Other choices for beginner carpeting plants are Monte Carlo and Pearlweed.

Dwarf Hairgrass, scientifically known as Eleocharis acicularis, is a small and elegant plant native to North America. It features thin, grass-like leaves that form dense clusters, creating a carpet-like effect when grown in aquariums. The plant has a vibrant green color that adds a refreshing and natural touch to aquatic landscapes. Dwarf Hairgrass typically reaches a height of 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) when fully grown, making it an excellent choice for creating low-lying foregrounds or midground plantings.

Aquascape Design and Versatility

Dwarf Hairgrass offers aquascapers a wealth of design possibilities. Its carpeting growth habit creates a striking visual impact, resembling a lush meadow in miniature. The fine, delicate blades of the plant create a sense of movement as they sway gently with the water current. Dwarf Hairgrass can be used to create contrast and depth in aquascapes, acting as a foreground plant against taller background plants or hardscape elements. It also provides a natural habitat for small fish, invertebrates, and shrimp, offering them protection and a place to forage.

Cultivation and Care

Cultivating Eleocharis acicularis requires attention to certain parameters for optimal growth. It thrives in moderate to high light conditions, which can be achieved using LED lights specifically designed for planted aquariums. Adequate CO2 supplementation is beneficial but not always necessary for success. The plant prefers nutrient-rich substrates, such as nutrient-rich soil or specialized aquarium substrates, which provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Regular fertilization with a balanced liquid fertilizer can further support growth and vibrancy. Additionally, maintaining stable water parameters, including a temperature range of 68-82°F (20-28°C) and slightly acidic to neutral pH, promotes optimal conditions for Dwarf Hairgrass. Trimming and pruning are necessary to prevent overgrowth and maintain the desired carpeting effect.

Dwarf Hairgrass stands as a graceful and versatile aquatic plant that adds a touch of elegance to aquariums. Its ability to form lush green carpets and create naturalistic aquatic landscapes has made it a popular choice among aquascapers. Embracing the captivating qualities of Eleocharis acicularis allows us to create beautiful underwater scenes that captivate the eye and provide a thriving environment for aquatic life.

Dwarf Hairgrass

Arrived really healthy and was planted with no losses. has started to send out runners that are sprouting after only two weeks. Is a little taller than I expected at about 15cm so not very 'dwarf'.
