Description
Hydrilla, commonly known as Water Thyme, is a fast-growing aquatic plant native to parts of Asia, Africa, and Australia. It is a hardy and versatile plant that can adapt to a veriety of water conditions and is often used as a pond plant. Hydrilla is characterized by a fluffy, feathery appearance, which makes it an attractive addition to any tank.
Hydrilla is an excellent option for cold water tanks, as it can grow in water temperatures as low as 10°C. It is also highly adaptable to different lighting conditions and can thrive in very low light conditions. However, under higher light conditions, the leaves will grow denser, with a greener colour and the plant will grow faster.
In addition to its aesthetic value, Water Thyme provides several benefits to aquariums. It is a natural oxygenator, releasing oxygen into the water and improving overall water quality. As a very fast grower, this plant also rapidly absorbs nutrients, which helps to prevent the growth of algae in ponds and aquaria. Hydrilla verticillata also provides a natural habitat for tadpoles and shrimp, and can serve as a hiding place for young fish.
Hydrilla is often mistaken for Elodea, a similar-looking aquatic plant. The native Hydrilla can best be identified by its thin serrated leaf margins, as Egeria densa leaves have smooth leave edges.
Hydrilla is a fast-growing, hardy, and versatile aquatic plant that can grow well in almost any pond or aquarium. It is extremely easy to care for, and its ability to adapt to various water conditions makes it a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
