Introduction

Rotala Macrandra, often simply referred to as "macrandra," is a stunning aquatic plant celebrated for its vibrant colors and intricate leaf patterns. This plant is a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts who seek to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to their underwater landscapes. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the characteristics, care requirements, and benefits of Rotala Macrandra, including its unique variant, Macrandra Green.

Characteristics of Rotala Macrandra

Rotala Macrandra is known for its distinctive and beautiful appearance. Here are its key features:

  • Color: The standard Rotala Macrandra boasts brilliant shades of red, pink, and sometimes orange, depending on the light and nutrient levels. The Macrandra Green variant, as the name suggests, has lush green foliage.
  • Leaves: The leaves are broad, oval-shaped, and display intricate veining, adding to the plant's aesthetic appeal.
  • Growth: Rotala Macrandra tends to grow vertically, reaching heights of 20-50 cm (8-20 inches). It creates dense clusters that can add depth and visual interest to an aquarium.

Optimal Conditions for Growing Rotala Macrandra

Providing the right environment is crucial for the health and vibrancy of Rotala Macrandra:

Lighting

Both Rotala Macrandra and Macrandra Green require high-intensity lighting to thrive and exhibit their best colors. Strong lighting enhances the red and pink hues of the standard macrandra and ensures the Macrandra Green remains vivid.

CO2 and Nutrients

  • CO2: Supplementing with CO2 is essential for promoting vigorous growth and enhancing color intensity.
  • Nutrients: Regular dosing with a comprehensive liquid fertilizer and iron supplements is necessary. Root tabs can also support the plant by providing nutrients directly to its roots.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: The ideal temperature range is between 22-28°C (72-82°F).
  • pH Level: A slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0-7.5 is optimal.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2-12 dGH) is preferable for healthy growth.

Substrate

A nutrient-rich substrate, such as aqua soil, provides the necessary support and nutrients for Rotala Macrandra to thrive.

Planting and Propagation

Planting

When planting Rotala Macrandra, insert individual stems into the substrate, spacing them adequately to allow for full, bushy growth. Regular trimming encourages branching and denser foliage.

Propagation

Propagation is straightforward through stem cuttings. Cut healthy stems with several leaves and plant them in the substrate. New roots will develop, and the cuttings will grow into new plants.

Benefits of Rotala Macrandra in Aquascaping

Aesthetic Appeal

Rotala Macrandra adds a striking visual element to any aquarium with its vibrant colors and intricate leaf patterns. It contrasts beautifully with green plants and can serve as a focal point or background plant in aquascapes.

Oxygenation

Like other aquatic plants, Rotala Macrandra helps oxygenate the water, promoting a healthy aquarium environment for fish and other inhabitants.

Algae Control

A healthy and well-maintained Rotala Macrandra can outcompete algae for nutrients, helping to keep algae growth under control and maintaining the overall beauty of the aquarium.
