Some Things You Don't Know About the Kuhli Loaches

Are you looking for a slightly oddball fish that's easy to care for and easy on the wallet? Keep reading as I share my thoughts on Kuhli Loaches, their care requirements, personality, and whether or not I think they’re worth keeping.

Hi, I’m a gamer, and I’m here with practical and proven tips for busy fish keepers like you. Back in the day, loaches were definitely on my bucket list of fish to keep. I mean, they’re so small and snake-like with little zebra patterns—what's not to love?

However, I heard they were nocturnal and super shy, so I avoided them for a long time. Luckily, I was able to set up a “Shy Guys Jungle” tank where I was deliberately looking for super timid fish. Once I got them, I seriously think the Kuhli Loach is one of the coolest beginner oddball fish there is.

Food for Kuhli Loaches

In the wild, Kuhli Loaches are omnivorous bottom dwellers, scavenging for bug larvae, small crustaceans, and plant matter. At home, I feed them small sinking foods or anything soft enough that they can break off easily. They’re not picky eaters and will consume most types of food.

Their favorites, however, seem to be Fluval Bug Bites, aquarium caviar, easy fry food, frozen foods, or gel foods. They also enjoy occasional vegetables like zucchini, squash, or even cantaloupe.

I’ve tried feeding them Hikari sinking wafers, which my Corydoras love, but the Kuhli Loaches didn’t take to them. Despite this, their peaceful nature means they can live with any other peaceful community fish—ones that won’t eat them, pick on them, or steal their food.

Tank Mates for Kuhli Loaches

Kuhli Loaches are so peaceful and that they can live peacefully with other fish like the tetras, rasboras, and even other bottom dwellers like Corydoras.

Are Kuhli Loaches Worth It?

Absolutely! Here's the thing: when you see Kuhli Loaches at the fish store, they’re usually crowded and hiding under filters or heaters, leading you to think they’re super shy nocturnal fish that will never be active. It was fascinating to watch!

Another bonus to having Kuhli Loaches is their hardiness. I heard a story about a master breeder who drained all the water out of his aquarium and took out all the fish, leaving just a little bit of water and some decor behind. A year later, when he went back to the aquarium, he found a single Kuhli Loach still alive, living off microorganisms growing in the tank. Now that's resilience!

Conclusion

Kuhli Loaches are great for beginners, offering a fascinating and low-maintenance addition to any peaceful aquarium. With their quirky behavior, peaceful nature, and hardiness, I highly recommend them for anyone looking to add a unique and easy-to-care-for fish to their tank.
